Off Grid Solar/ Remote Area Power
Daniel Shea Electrical and Solar are Clean Energy Council Accredited to Design and Install Off Grid Solar Power. Off-grid power systems supply electricity to properties that are not connected to the public electricity network. This maybe because they are in a remote area, or on an Island and there is no grid available, or the distance to the grid makes it an uneconomical choice. These systems are often referred to as "stand-alone power systems" (SAPS), or "remote area power systems" (RAPS) These systems are independent power stations capable of powering a wide range of applications with dependable and reliable electricity that is no different to that supplied by the national electricity grid. Whether it be for a small or large new or existing home, a station, business or an entire community that depends on large diesel generators, off-grid stand alone power systems are commonly the reliable, clean, hassle free, cost competitive answer!
How Does It Work
Electricity generated by solar panels or fuel powered generators either directly powers your electrical loads or charges storage batteries via an inverter/charger controller. At night, the inverter supplies the energy stored in the battery bank. When the sun comes up the next day, the cycle begins again.Remote area power system can be configured either as an AC-Coupling or DC-Coupling system. Each configuration has their unique advantages. The configuration type will depend on variables such as load, budget have an impact on the life expectancy, efficiency and flexibility of your system.
AC Coupled System This system is more suited to larger PV installations requiring AC power with more frequent load requirements both day and night. Installation will be quicker and cheaper with this method as the solar panels can be wired at up to 600V DC open circuit, with today’s solar panels generally having MC connectors, it makes connecting multiple solar panels in series very easy. This also allows the use of standard AC appliances which are cheaper and more readily available. These systems are easier to upgrade with extra panels, or adding a wind generator.
DC Coupled System DC Coupled systems are more suited to smaller installations requiring a mixture of DC and Ac loads. The hardware required to do this is generally cheaper. The efficiency when charging the battery will be maximised using DC Coupling as there is only the Solar Controller in series with the charging.
